The Institute of Industrial Engineers describes industrial engineers as those who design, improve, and install systems of people, material, information, equipment and energy. Not surprisingly, there are several specializations within this broad field. However, they are all related by an emphasis on the systems aspects of engineering problems.Taking the systems view of problems means that the industrial engineer often tackles large-scale problems involving the integration of many subsystems. These subsystems might be the focus of other branches of engineering and science. Thus, the nature of industrial engineering graduate study and research is interdisciplinary.
Graduate studies in Industrial and Systems Engineering at Ohio State fall naturally into four specializations that emphasize a particular aspect of industrial systems: 1) human factors engineering, which emphasizes the function of people in the system, 2) manufacturing process engineering, which emphasizes the process of turning raw materials into finished components, 3) operations research, which emphasizes integrating individual system components to improve performance, and 4) production systems engineering, which emphasizes the design and control of manufacturing, distribution, and service systems. Within each of these specializations are a number of focus areas.
